Self Tanning
Tanned
skin is gorgeous, especially in the summer! Some people obtain a
beautiful bronze by sunbathing, but excessive sun exposure can lead to
some very negative health effects, like sunburns and an increased risk
of skin cancer. It can also weaken your immune system and accelerate the
aging of your skin. Luckily, you can get a sun-kissed look without the
sun damage by applying a self-tanner.
Self
tanning can be a daunting task, but with the right preparation,
application, and aftercare, you'll be looking bronzed and beautiful in
no time! Read on for some helpful hints on how to have a streak-free,
sun-free tan.
Prep School
- Remember to shave or wax 24 hours in advance. It's not recommended to apply self-tanner to irritated or red skin. If you have trouble with ingrown hairs or irritation, try Tend Skin Solution.
- Remove your dead skin cells by exfoliating prior to tanning. This will help prevent any splotches or streaks. It's best to use a scrub or polish. For maximum exfoliation, use a lightly abrasive cloth.
- Hydrate your heels, knees, and elbows. A oil spray or a light lotion can prevent the tanner from saturating these areas and help ensure a more consistent tan. The Fake Bake Skin Smoothie Special Dry-Oil Spray is a product for this.
Apply Yourself
- Use a tight-fitting pair of gloves and possibly even a tanning mitt. This will help with application and keep your palms from getting too dark.
- Flexibility not your strong suit? Try a Body Buddy or an applicator for those hard to reach spots.
- Apply self-tanner in small circular movements. Bend knees and elbows to keep the skin taught during application. On arms, work from the shoulder down. On legs, work from the hip down.
- Save the hands for last. Remove your gloves and apply a small amount of self-tanner to the back of your hand and blend with the back of your other hand.
Afterglow
- Stay away from light colored clothing until after you have showered off the guide color of your self-tanner!
- Do not bathe, swim, or sweat at least 6-8 hours after you apply your self-tanner. Water will stop the tan from developing.
- Rather than rub, pat dry after you bathe to help avoid your tan coming off prematurely.
- Your tan should last you about 5-7 days. Exfoliating about 3-4 days after tanning will help your tan fade evenly.
