Holiday Hand Care

So, as anyone in the beauty business knows, the Creative Nail Design "Shellac" has hit the market and has just been HUGE! I see women all day who spend countless hours and dollars on having perfect, beautiful nails, but the skin on the hands around their nails gets no attention at all. A few tips on how to keep your nails and your hands moisturized and perfectly manicured this Holiday season are:

1. Exfoliate! I know it seems like this word is in every one of our blogs numerous times, but it is such an important step that so many people skip. My number one favorite product for this is the One Minute Manicure. I almost think the name sells this product short as it is so amazing on your hands, feet, legs, etc. I would skip the sensitive facial skin, but it is truly amazing at moisturizing and exfoliating in one simple step. My second favorite product, which is a bit newer, but just as amazing, would be the ZO Skin Health Oraser Microderm Hand Renewal. This product is a bit more delicate as its' grains are much finer than the One Minute Manicure, so it may be better for aging or sensitive skin.

2. Moisturize daily! So many people wash and sterilize their hands so many times a day, but so few replenish that moisture that the alcohol in hand sanitizer and soap depletes. For day time, I religiously use the Dermalogica AGEsmart MultiVitamin Hand and Nail Treatment. This product does a great job of moisturizing without leaving my hands so greasy that they feel like they are just attracting more dirt after using it. I also think the ZO Skin Health Oraser Daily Hand Repair with SPF 20 is great for people who are outside or exposed to UVA/UVB rays frequently. Many people don't realize how much aging can happen on your hands in such a short period of time. This is very thin and delicate skin you are dealing with and it has to be treated with care.

3. Night treatments! The one solid 8 hours most people manage to go without washing their hands is while they sleep. So why you're catching your Zzzzz, why not do a little repair with the ZO Skin Health Oraser Overnight Hand Recovery. This product will restore elasticity and original texture, and you can really see the results in a matter of a week or so!

To try these great products, you can purchase the ZO Skin Health Oraser Anti-Aging Hand Care Program ($50) or try out all these other great products at!

Winter Lip Care - What to Use?

I always feel like my lips are chapped, dry, flaky... always. But what can you do in these especially dry seasons to help combat this issue?

Step One, don't overdo it! The one thing many don't realize when applying chap stick, etc is that the more you apply, the less your skin creates natural moisture. A few products I really like that create a nice moisture barrier are Soothing Touch Peppermint Lip Balm. I put this on maybe once a day instead of 5-6 times like most others. I also really love the Bioelements Instant Emollient.

Step Two, Exfoliate! Your lips are just like any other parts of your skin and they need exfoliation. There are a lot of great products out there for this such as Bioelements Lip Buff. Another product that can help from the inside out is the Dermalogica AGEsmart Renewal Lip Complex. It not only moisturizes but help with smoothing fine lines on and around your lips. The results are amazing.

Step Three... Protect. Try to always look for a lip moisturizer like the Brave Soldier Lip Defender. Another good one is by gloMinerals called the Mint Balm (spf 15). The sun and other environmental effects can really wreak havoc on the thin sensitive skin on and around your lips.

Whatever you choose to use, don't apply too much or too frequently and your lips should be soft, smooth and moisturized in no time. You can find these great products and many more at

5. Sir Active Deep Cleansing Scrub: Sir Activ is an invigorating, deep cleansing scrub that adds vitality and radiance to dull and lifeless skin. Sweep away dead skin cells with the small Jojoba beads that gently exfoliate while the Zeolites (silicates from volcanoes) help to remove the impurities leaving your skin feeling smooth and soft. The intoxicating essence of Cranberry and Apple botanicals will leave your senses wanting more. City dwellers exposed to harmful pollution (from cigarette smoke to urban smog) should make this special, deep cleansing scrub a regular part of their skin care regime.

Anti-Aging Skin Tips

Skin is the largest organ in the human body playing a vital role as the first line of protection, securing the most delicate organs in the body.
Ways in nurturing the skin is considered essential for a person’s total wellness.
Skin aging is a very usual problem a person encounters with the years.
There are two types of aging categorized as intrinsic and extrinsic skin aging. The intrinsic aging is the natural aging process brought by the genes one has inherited.
The extrinsic skin aging is caused by environmental factors like sun exposure and unhealthy lifestyle.
To treat skin aging, one should know the reasons of this problem and find possible means to address this issue.

Extrinsic skin aging is caused by several external factors that go together with the normal aging process that results to premature aging.

Here are 5 top tips to prevent the skin from premature aging.

*A person who is exposed in the sun without putting any skin protection is prone to develop skin problems that later contribute to skin aging. Uneven and rough skin, freckles, age spots, loose skin, facial spider veins, blotchy complexion and skin cancer can be traced to serious unprotected sun exposure.

*Dermatologists recommend that a person should apply sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher 20 minutes before sun exposure. The higher the SPF it has, the more protection it offers against ultra-violet radiation.

*Another prevalent cause is cigarette smoking which initiates biochemical changes in the body accelerating skin aging. People who smoke for several years are found to develop a complexion with unhealthy yellowish hue, a significant sign of skin deterioration. Deeply wrinkled and leathery skin is noticeable among smokers compared to those who are non-smokers.

But these signs can be reduced when a person decides to avoid and even completely stop the habit. Individuals who decide to quit smoking show less facial wrinkling and improved skin tones are becoming visible upon breaking off the cigarette smoking.

*Also, a daily intake of retinol which is a fat soluble vitamin can help in preventing rapid skin aging. One of the most usable forms of Vitamin A, retinol is important in vision, normal bone & tooth development, reproduction and maintaining a healthy skin.

*Another pointer to delay signs of aging is exfoliation. A regular session of exfoliating helps a person to have a glowing skin as it removes the first layer of dead skin that may cause blackheads, whiteheads and worst, acne. It gently removes the visible fine lines caused by excessive dirt, oil and dead skin cells.

*Finally, one is encouraged to invest in antioxidants that help in repairing damages allowing rejuvenation in the damaged areas of the skin. There are many natural skin care products that contain antioxidants which help in fighting free radicals. Fruits and vegetables are also good sources of antioxidants.

Holiday Make Up Must Haves!

Around the holidays you always want to look your best. You go to more parties, and see more people, around the holidays than you do any other time of the year. Most of us do our best to look fresh, clean and festive. A few things I find very necessary this time of year are:

1. Good Eye Make-Up Remover: A must have for removing all that "smoky" eye makeup and "big lash" mascara. I can't live without the Dermalogica Soothing Eye Make-Up Remover. I find it great for people who wear contacts, as your eyes can be so sensitive to other harsh cleansers. The Elaine Gregg Gentle Eye Make-Up Remover is also a great product for people with dry skin, as it seems to be more of an oil based product than a harsh gel.

2. Skin Primer: A primer, or lack thereof, can definitely make or break an awesome makeup job. One of my favorite products in general is the ZO Skin Health Oclipse Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30. I also like the gloMinerals face primer as it slides on smooth as silk! These will help "fill in" and give you a smooth surface before applying foundation. I also use the gloMinerals lid primer as it keeps my eye makeup clean and helps it stay on longer.

3. Mineral, non-pore clogging foundation: Whether you like liquid or powder, loose or pressed, gloMinerals is the way to go. I love that my make-up is NEVER the cause of a breakout, and it has contains Titanium Dioxide that works as a second sunblock. I love the gloMinerals pressed powder for it's amazing coverage. The gloProtective liquid foundation is also great and not heavy or "cakey" like so many liquid foundations.

4. Fun Holiday Make-Up Colors: Holiday make-up is unlike any other in that you want to look "festive", especially around Christmas and New Year's Eve. Some of my very favorite holiday colors are:
*gloMinerals gloShimmer brick, gleam. Pretty colors that are versatile for cheeks and eyes!
*gloMinerals gloSmoky Eye Kit. Great colors, all in one palette, for that amazing Smoky Eye.
*gloMinerals gloCream Eyeliner - Ebony. Never has black eyeliner lasted so long, or had such great, dark pigment.
*LipToxyl Sheer Lip Colors. There's a shade for every skin tone and they have a hint of plumper, but not the normal intolerable sting that can come with some. The Nude is great for the classic look, and the Precious will look good on just about anyone!

After all these fun colors and fabulous faces, you will need a great cleanser to clean out those pores and give you a fresh face for the new year. One of my favorite new cleansers is the ZO Skin Health Hydrating Cleanser. It is tough on removing makeup, while not drying your skin out like many cleansers with the harsh "Sodium Laureth Sulfate".

Whether you're hunting for great skin care products, makeup or hairspray to keep that fabulous holiday-do, you can find them all at

SkinCare Products Prices. What is "too good" of a deal?

I get phone calls every day based on our 115% Low Price Guarantee. Customers call and they want me to match prices on Amazon, Ebay and even Craigslist sometimes! I don't know anyone who likes to "lose" money, so how these products get sold for a serious percentage below our COST just baffles me!

How could a retailer sell a product for less than wholesale cost and still make money? A few different ways, and they're rather scary if you ask me.

1. The product was stolen. If they didn't pay for the product in the first place, why would they care what they're selling it for? They just want the lowest price, to turn over the most profit.

2. The product came from a 2nd or 3rd hand it is expired or not even the same product in the container. I've actually had a customer call me and have to spend another $100 because the $70 or $80 they saved got them not Vitamin C, but water.

The importance of buying products that you are putting on your skin or in your hair from a valid re-seller of that brand is very significant. The number of agents that could have been put in product that is not sealed, brand new or direct from the manufacturer could do some serious damage to your skin, and your wallet. A few ways to tell if a website is a valid re-seller are:

1. Do their prices match the full MSRP (retail price)? If not, some companies allow 5% or 10% off, at the most. Never do skincare companies just say "Sure. Sell our products on your website for 20% off". It just doesn't happen.

2. Does that company sell the full line of the brand, i.e., SkinMedica, Obagi, etc? There are a few brands out there and we will choose not to carry the men's portion of the line, or the body products, but never do we only carry 20 out of 40 products. Many times if someone is only carrying product that they received from an unknown source, they'll just carry what they can get their hands on and not the full line.

3. What is that companies return policy? If someone has a "no returns, whatsoever" policy, it is usually because they do not have a way for being reimbursed for product that is faulty or that a customer is dissatisfied with. At, we will take any product return, as long as it has been ordered from us, within 30 days, we will refund your money or give you store credit. We do this because all of our products come directly from the manufacturer and we have no problem getting a replacement product.

When it comes to buying skincare products online, I understand we all want a good deal. Some of the main things to be careful about are what ingredients are being used, how far is the product away from its expiration date and is this product being sold at a reasonable retailer price. We all have to be careful of this especially around the holidays.

For any questions or for that 115% price match guarantee, contact us at 1-800-926-5219 and speak with a friendly, courteous customer service specialist.

Dry Air doesn't have to mean Dry Skin

Dry Winter Air holds basically no moisture. This can lead to all sorts of skin issues from dry patches to sensitivity and even breakouts. To combat dry winter skin, be sure you have a good daily moisturizer. There are also solutions such as moisturizing masks and great cooling and soothing serums.

Some of my favorites are:
1. Cosmedix Emulsion: This intense hydrator can turn dry, flaky skin smooth and hydrated in no time. My favorite part of this product is that while it hydrates it does not cause breakouts or irritation with heavy fragrances. It gives you a great dewy look without oil or other parabens.

2. iS Clinical Moisturizing Complex: Designed to not only provide essential hydration to the underlying skin layers, but also provide excellent external protection from free radical damage caused by the environment. This product has great antioxidant properties and will sooth the most chafed of skin.

As far as moisturizing and soothing serums go, I love:

1. Cellex-C Hydra 5 B-Complex: An oil-free, crystal clear gel containing an extraordinarily high percentage of hyaluronic acid - the body's own natural moisturizer. Smoother, silkier, more radiant looking skin will be noticed in 3-6 weeks. It's moisture in one of it's purest forms.

2. iS Clinical Hydra-Cool Serum: With its healing properties of Kojic Acid, as well as it's moisturizing properties with the B5 and Hyaluronic Acid, this product is a must have for any dry skin patient.

One of the most important things to remember when you are moisturizing is not to overdo it. You want to supplement your skin with the moisture it needs that is no longer coming in from the warm summer humidity, but not so much that you supplement your skin's own natural tendency to moisturize.

Healthy Holiday Skin!

With Halloween behind us, we all need to prep our skin to look our best for the upcoming holidays. Thanksgiving and Christmas just mean family, traveling, and lack of a normal routine, which can wreak havoc on your skin! Some great things to try for the holidays are Travel Sets! These typically contain air safe sizes and at great prices!

My favorites include the iS Clinical Anti-Aging and iS Clinical Hyperpigmentation travel kits. Bioelements has some wonderful kits for your eyes this season as well, as allergies can really do a number on that sensitive skin! I love the Bioelements Eye Rejuvenation Kit!

Another great product to consider is the Clarisonic Mia! This can keep your skin clean and exfoliated, even on the go, in a convenient travel size, with a pLink international charger!

Before this holiday season gets under way, get rid of all of that Halloween make up left in your pores, by exfoliating, and using great natural exfoliants. As opposed to just scrubs, natural exfoliants really help keep your skin turning over during this dry winter season when you can really get thick layers of build up. I love to use the Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant during these dryer seasons as it is gentle enough to use every day! At night time, I like to back off the stronger retinols and use either the Dermalogica AGEsmart Multivitamin Thermafoliant or the Cosmedix Defy.

Even though it's not summer anymore, don't forget your sunblock! Your skin is exposed to just as many if not more rays on the slopes as it is in the water. Some of the best sunblocks for this dry holiday season are Cosmedix Hydrate + and SkinMedica TNS Ultimate Daily Moisturizer with SPF 20. Another great thing about both of these products is that they are under 3 oz, travel safe, and can be your moisturizer + sunblock in one, which means less products to haul around.

You can find all these great products and more at

With all these great options, you should be all set for that great facial we all hope we're getting for Christmas this year!

Clarisonic Cleansing Systems

Four years ago, I was working at a salon/spa and we started carrying Clarisonic. At the time, I thought even the cost of it with my discount was just too much to spend on one skin care tool. Thank God I didn't listen to my pocket book.

My Clarisonic is without a doubt one of the most valuable skin care tools today. All those other costly serums and creams you use will do you absolutely no good without clean, unclogged pores.

The Clarisonic will do wonders for your skin. I use the Clarisonic twice a day. In the shower in the morning: I apply a pea sized dot of iS Clinical Cleansing Complex in the center of the brush and start the brush up. I use it for one minute on my face and then another minute on my neck and chest. At night, after I use my Dermalogica Soothing Eye Makeup Remover to remove my eye makeup, I use another dot of cleanser, usually Cosmedix Benefit Clean, but if I feel I am needing extra moisture, I might use a more creamy cleanser like Bioelements Moisture Positive Cleanser. I use the brush over my face for just a minute again, but skip the neck and chest as it is too messy to do that out of the shower.

I definitely feel my skin is cleaner each time I use it. Even the few times here and there that I forget to charge, or get lazy and just use my hands, my skin looks dull and just doesn't feel "facial clean".

I even found out recently that my husband uses it every day with his SkinMedica Facial Cleanser and he says it makes the hairs on his face softer and he has less irritation when he shaves!

You can even get the Clarisonic Replacement BrushHeads in twin packs now, making them more economical than previously.

This is the one product you will NOT be disappointed with!

The Act of Balancing - Your Skin That Is

Recently I went on vacation and discovered that though the trip was great, the climate was incredibly different than that of where I live. I suddenly found my skin not adjusting as well as the rest of me to the dry climate.

Balancing your skin can be real work. Here are a few tips and great products that help combat oil and dry patches, without breaking you out!

1. Facial Cleansers without sulfates: My favorite is the iS Clinical Cleansing Complex. The iS Clinical Cleansing Complex may be odd to some first time users, as there is basically no foam or "soap". That is actually one of it's best properties. I used mine daily with my Clarisonic Skincare Brush and my face always feels very clean, without that tight, dry feeling you get from a lot of cleansers.

2. Toner: The dilemma of whether or not to use a Toner is a question skincare consultants and patients have been asking for years. I personally believe, you must prepare your skin before putting on all of your other products, or they just don't work as well. If you skin pH is off, you may be putting products on your skin that aren't doing as good of a job as they can. I think one of the best toners out there is the SkinMedica Rejuvenative Toner. It is nice, light and doesn't leave your skin smelling of alcohol and witch hazel.

3. Sunblock, Sunblock, Sunblock: Whether you use a moisturizer that includes your sunblock, or you layer, this is one of the most important products any woman can use. A great Vitamin C or anti-oxidant to protect your skin from free radicals and other harsh pollutants in the environment is very important. If you can get both a Vitamin C and Sunblock, that's the best. For this combination, my favorite is the Cosmedix Pure C, which are 100% Vitamin C crystals that can be mixed into any moisturizer or sunblock. There are a number of great sunblocks on the market, and your skin type will be one of the biggest factors in what kind you choose. Many sunblocks contain 2 or 3 different types, which together can sometimes be too harsh for sensitive skin. I love the Obagi C-Rx Sunguard SPF 30. It has a nice whipped texture and is never too heavy or greasy.

4. No matter what you're using, don't overdo it! So many people with oily skin think they need to use all the products with Salicylic Acid in them, to keep them from being oily or breaking out. In most cases, this just does the opposite. The more people dry their skin out, the more your skin thinks it needs to produce moisture. Therefore, you end up with the exact opposite reaction than you wanted. Many people with dry skin also use moisturizer on top of moisturizer, or something too heavy. If you continue to supplement your skin with moisture, it's going to quit producing any on it's own.

Let's hope we can all find our perfect skin balance. You can find these products and 1000's of other great one's by shopping at

iS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum! Multi-Purpose and Must-Have!

We all have minor skin irritations from time to time. Some people are unfortunate enough to suffer from persistent conditions like rosacea and dermatitis.

While I cannot complain about persistent irritation, sometimes I do find myself with minor redness, not to mention a bug bite or minor burn. When it occurs on the face, it’s particularly troublesome and everyone wants the problem to go away ASAP.

I have used iS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum Advance Plus for minor irritation around the eye area with great results. About a week ago I received a mild chemical burn from my colorist and figured I would try the serum by iS Clinical to see if it improved my condition. I was really impressed with the results. After only a couple of days, the skin looked much improved, less red and on the road to recovery. I was wondering what else this little miracle in a bottle is capable of taking on. After diving into a little more research, I have found that it's 15% concentration of L-ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) also has amazing anti-oxidant properties, plus the Vitamin E and Vitamin A really help keep my skin looking fresh!

Apparently the product is effective for those battling rosacea and even cystic acne. If you have used other iS Clinical products, please let me know what you think about those as well. iS Clinical Reviews seem to be quite positive overall. You can purchase iS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum Advance + at

Reverse Sun Damage!

Sun damage, also known as photo damage is a result of unprotected exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. It may be classified as either acute (as in a sunburn) or chronic (more gradual skin changes observed over time due to accumulated sun exposure). Chronic sun damage results in skin changes that may include age spots, hyperpigmented skin, fine lines and wrinkles and loss of skin tone and elasticity. Pre-cancerous lesions and skin cancers may be another result of sun damage.

How Does Sun Damaged Skin Look?

Think of a baby’s smooth, unlined, firm and unblemished skin; this is what healthy and undamaged skin looks like. Sun damage results in many skin changes including:

*Fine and coarse wrinkles
*Skin roughness; sometimes a leathery texture is observed
*Loss of skin tone and elasticity
*Dark patches or increased pigmentation

Avoiding Sun Damage

Your best strategy is to try and avoid (or at the very least, minimize) sun damage by practicing sun avoidance and sun protection with the regular use of sunscreens that block against the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. Sun great sunblocks are iS Clinical SPF 25 Treatment Sunscreen, or for more convenience you can get the same product in an convenient powder that you can apply anywhere! Check out iS Clinical Sunscreen Powder SPF 20. Keep in mind that while UVB rays lead to acute sun damage (Burning), that UVA rays lead to chronic sun damage (Aging). Since UVA rays are prevalent year round even on the coldest, cloudiest day, you should aim to apply sunscreen every day, year round if you wish to keep your skin looking young and healthy. If your youth was filled with carefree days at the beach or extended tropical holidays, without following smart sun habits, then you may be a candidate for reversing some of the damage caused by the sun. There are a number of products and treatments that can help, all to varying degrees. Here is what to consider:

1. Hydroquinone creams and other skin lighteners can help to even out pigmentation and help with dark spots. Check out all the great Skin Lighteners we have in stock!
2. Retinoids (Retinol, Vitamin A, Retin-A) have been shown to reverse sun damage. A good non-prescription alternative is retinol, found in SkinMedica Tri-Retinol Complex ES, and which many individuals find easier to tolerate than prescription options.
3. Alpha hydroxy acids can help to slough off dead, dry skin minimizing the appearance of fine lines and rough skin. Try SkinMedica 15% AHA/BHA Face Cream
4. Resurfacing lasers. Several types are available, depending on the extent and depth of the sun damage.
5. Antioxidants including Vitamin C and green tea can help to ward off further sun damage. Consider layering under your sunscreen daily.

Summer's Almost Over, but that Doesn't Mean it's Time to Lay off the Sunblock!

Summer is almost over and so many people start laying off the sunblock. Unfortunately, the sun is just as strong through out the whole fall and winter! I used iS Clinical treatment sunscreen all summer and I've also discovered that they have it in POWDER version ($40) that can be continually applied all day long! iS Clinical Suncare is made with Titanium Dioxide - the safest form of sunscreen.

I mean they work with the skin cancer institute in Washington DC, I think it's safe to say they know what they're doing when it comes to protecting our skin!

1. iS Clinical SPF 20 Powder Sunscreen Translucent - The powder goes on light and does not cake at all when you re-apply. Genius product!

2. iS Clinical SPF 20 Powder Sunscreen - Sun Medium - This one is awesome for a little "bronze" or sun-kissed glow!

3. iS Clinical SPF 25 Treatment Sunscreen - I love this sunscreen, it's also moisturizing so I skip the day cream altogether and just use this. Now that I layer the powder over the treatment sunscreen I feel like I'm fully protected from damaging sun rays.

4. iS Clinical SPF 25 Treatment Sunscreen PerfecTint - Now this may just be the most perfect summer skin care product of the year. It's the treatment sunscreen with tinted moisturizer (more of a bronzing cream actually) that gives a medium coverage so when you're on the beach or by the pool you are presentable without looking overdone. I love the color this gives, a perfect golden tan! If you find it is a little dark for you, you can buffer the color with another daily moisturizer, or a combination of the regular Treatment Sunscreen and you got a "hint" of PerfecTint!

These are some of the best sunscreens on the market today especially without the "burn" or "tingle" of all the harsh chemicals that are out there today!

Also, Check out the great specials at for a great option for iS Clinical gift with purchase to receive a free sunblock!

Your Skin Between the Sheets

One thing many people don't realize is that a lot of what happens to your skin, happens at night. For example, your skin turns over 7 times faster at night than it does during the day.

Also, keeping clean sheets is very important for keeping oil, bacteria and other skin hazards off of your face. Many people wash their sheets and pillow cases when they think they need to because they appear to. Many forms of dirt, oil and bacteria can't always be seen.

We recommend washing your sheets and pillowcases weekly in order to keep your skin free from these overnight irritants.

To start with be sure you are removing all impurities from your day. I think one of the best products ever for this is the Clarisonic Plus Skincare System. This product has proven to clean deep down in pores and removing 90% more dirt and oil than cleansing with your hands or a cloth alone.

Other things you can use are great night time products that help reduce oil, and prevent breakouts such as Bioelements Oil Control Sleepwear

Another great night time product is iS Clinical Active Serum, which does so many great things for your skin, I don't know where to start! This product has great anti-bacterial, exfoliating, lightening and toning properties and is a must have for anyone, except those with sensitive skin.

If you already have acneic skin, or trouble with blemishes, be sure after putting that daily cover up on, that you are fighting them overnight with a great product like Dermalogica MediBac Overnight Clearing Gel.

Just remember, if you want your face to look great during the day, you've got to take great care of it at night!

End of Summer Hair Repair!

End of Summer Hair Repair

We all love summer for Sun, Fun, Splashes, Waves and Dives, but all the heat, chlorine, and salt can reek havoc on your hair! For hair that needs some serious recharging, try these great steps below.

1. Clarify. One of the main reasons people have hair that looks “dull” is due to product build up, etc. You can try Kenra Clarifying Shampoo, Number 4 High Performance Hair Care’s Clarifying Shampoo or MOP (Modern Organic Products) C-System Clean Shampoo. Any of these great cleansers will help remove any excess oil and build up, while also preparing your hair to really soak up a great reparative mask or conditioner.

2. Rejuvenate. After you’ve clarified, you’ll definitely want to replace the moisture and shine that all that damage have done. You can try Alfaparfs’ Nutri-Seduction Ultra Moisture Treatment, N4 High Performance Hair Care - Lumiere d'hiver Reconstructing Masque - 5.1 oz, Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque, or Keratin Complex Deep Repair Vanilla Bean Conditioner. All of these are wonderful masques!

3. Protect from future damage. While sun, salt, and chlorine are always going to be elements you can’t necessarily escape, you can always do your best to prevent. There are many great products out there with an SPF like “Sunscreen for your hair”. One of the best is actually a new product from Alfaparf, the Color Protection Crystals. They can really protect hair from damaging UV rays, and help your pocketbook by helping your color last longer! SHH! Don’t tell your stylist I told you!

4 Basic Steps of SkinCare

There's tried-and-true ways to properly care for your skin, from the right way to cleanse your face, to the best moisturizers and sunscreens.

Before we start with the proper daily 4-step skincare routine, you'll need to know your skin type. How you care for your skin is utterly dependent on the type of skin you have: oily, normal/combination, dry, sensitive or sun- damaged. Find out what skin type you have.
The Basic 4-Step Skincare Regimen S

Step 1: Cleansing

Simple is key here. You need to find a good cleanser that your skin responds well to, and stick with it. See the best cleansers for your skin type.
Avoid bar soaps as they tend to dry out the skin. According to Rona Berg, in her book, "Beauty," a French cosmetics executive once told her, "Soap should only ever touch your skin from the neck down." We agree. Choose a creamy cleanser if you have dry skin or a clear cleanser if you have oily skin.

Be careful not to cleanse too often. Washing at night should do you. If you have dry skin, consider cold cream like Benefit Clean by Cosmedix or Bioelements Flash Foam Cleanser, which are both gentle enough for almost any skin type. Most women prefer the water method: Use warm water to loosen dirt and clogged pores. Use a dime-sized bit of cleanser, and then rinse with cool or lukewarm water. You'll also want to take off your makeup with a proper makeup remover.

In the morning, a splash of lukewarm water is all you need (we find it's great for removing excess oils from your nightly moisturizing). Never wash your face with hot or cold water (both can cause broken capillaries). Also be careful about over cleansing skin, which can dry out skin and remove essential oils that your skin natural produces and needs.

Step 2: Exfoliate

Exfoliation is the step most people skip in their weekly skincare routine. But trust me, if you start properly exfoliating your skin, you will notice an almost immediate difference. According to Berg, one of the reasons men's skin looks more youthful than women's is because men tend to exfoliate daily when they shave. There are several ways to exfoliate skin: Microdermabrasion, chemical peels and retinoids.

Scrubs work by removing the top layer of dead skin cells that tend to dull your complexion. We find exfoliating skin once a week with a Microdermabrasion kit keeps skin glowing year-round. Make sure you use a gentle scrub with tiny grains. Big grains in cheap scrubs can tear skin and cause more harm than good. My favorite Microdermabrasion product is: ZO Skin Health Offects Exfoliating Polish.

In the hour it takes to get a chemical peel, you can take off five years from your face. Can't afford the price tag for a monthly peel? Try some over-the-counter peels that work over the course of a month. I prefer Pure Enzymes by Cosmedix or Bioelements Pumice Peel.

Retinoids also work by removing the top layer of dead skin cells while also generating collagen in the skin. "Collagen is the skin's structural fiber," dermatologist Dennis Gross said in O Magazine. "As we get older, it breaks down, creating lines and large pores." Skincare experts disagree on all sorts of things, but most of them consider retinoids to be a miracle skin saver.

Should you use a toner? Some people swear by toners, but many beauty experts do not (I once read a skincare expert claim, "Toners are only for copy machines"). Toners are meant to remove all remaining traces of oil, makeup and dirt, but a good cleanser should do this. I firmly believe it's up to you. If you like the way your skin feels with a toner. Buy it. Use it. Enjoy it. If you’re new to Toners, and would like to try a great one, try SkinMedica Rejuvenative Toner.

Step 3: Moisturize

While I know of at least one famous beauty editor who swore skin doesn't need moisturizer, basically everyone else I've read disagrees and is an adamant believer in it. A basic law of beauty is that everyone, no matter her skin type, should moisturize. Even if your skin is oily, it will benefit from moisturizers. (The only exception is those with acne). Why? Moisturizers seal moisture into skin (Berg calls this the "Saran Wrap effect"). So how much should you moisturize? Your skin will tell you. When your skin is tight, it's crying out for moisture. Be careful not to over moisturize -- this can clog pores.

I like a good basic, all skin types moisturizer such as SkinMedica Rejuvenative Moisture.

Are eye creams necessary? Well maybe. Some beauty experts strongly recommend eye creams. Why? The skin around the eye contains no fatty tissue and is therefore very thin and susceptible to wrinkles. Special eye creams are formulated to "thicken" this area. Yet other experts (including the beauty editors of Allure in their new book) claim your daily lotion works around the eyes just as well. If you want the best of the best, try the iS Clinical Youth Eye Complex. You’ll never believe you did without it at one time.

Step 4: Apply Sunscreen

O Magazine ran an article featuring interviews with several top skin care experts and dermatologists (check it out here). Every single one of them said sunscreen was the most important part of your skincare regimen. It was the secret they would pass on to their daughters. A few of my favorites are Pevonia Botanica Hydrating Sunscreen SPF 30 and Dermalogica AGEsmart Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 30.

The number-1 cause of wrinkles is sun damage, so it's important to use sunscreen from your early years on even in winter and on cloudy days. A great trick is to purchase two moisturizers: One for night and one for day that includes UV protection. Don't use moisturizers with sunscreen at night, the ingredients are not meant to be used 24/7 and can aggravate skin.

Anti Aging & ZO Skin Health!

If you had heard the words “anti-aging” five years ago you probably would’ve thought of protesters outside a retirement home before you thought of the beauty industry. Today, however, it’s a household term. Personal care and cosmetic brands are hailing the anti-aging bandwagon and will do anything to jump aboard. But, how many of them deserve a ride?
We recently came across an anti-aging fragrance — yes, fragrance — that claims to make you SMELL youthful. Like us, you’re probably wondering what youth smells like. Well, pink grapefruit, mango, pomegranate and musk, of course. The same ingredients half the fragrances on the cosmetic counters contain.
There isn’t a personal care or cosmetic item too far-fetched for the anti-aging stamp. Nail polish has thrown its hat into the ring. Mascara wasn’t far behind. We’re waiting for deodorant, lipstick and mouthwash to get in on the game.
Those are just flat-out ridiculous examples, but other products trying to encroach into the niche we’ve mastered make a more convincing case. For instance, toothpaste. We all know teeth lose their strength and whiteness as we get older. Hair care products also have some legitimacy. Your mane slowly becomes a mop over the years. But, guess what? People who have the misfortune of aging teeth and aging hair have the good fortune of veneers and Raquel Welch wigs.
Let’s face it: Skin is the hands-down most telltale sign of aging on your body. Unlike your hair and teeth, you can’t put on a new face. Not even with the best plastic surgeon money can buy. That’s why skincare lines with ingredients recognized by the FDA to fight signs of aging are legitimately entitled to the anti-aging label.
Dr. Zein Obagi and ZO Skin Health can help you fight aging, but we can’t help you sort through all the anti-aging claims. Exercise wise consumerism. Your skin will thank you for it

Dermalogica: Sun block and your Skin

March 20 is the Vernal Equinox here in the Northern Hemisphere, when the sun will cross directly over the Earth’s equator. This brings the tilt of the Earth’s axis to 23.4 degrees, and this means that the sun’s rays hit us full-on.

March 20 also is Nowruz, the Persian New Year. Doesn’t it make sense to you that the new year begins on the first day of Spring, when birds court and coo, and tender buds swell, rather than in January? I’ve also read that the Great Sphinx is angled in such a way that the rays of the Spring sun point directly at it.

Which brings me to: unless you, too, are an ancient stone carving, you need to step up the solar protection starting right now. It’s incredible to me that, even though the American Cancer Society has been conducting an aggressive public service campaign about the risk of melanoma for more than two decades, the incidence of skin cancer is up, not down.

I think the reason is that new technology makes people cocky. They read that their sun block is SPF 400, and they think they can bask safely.
Not so. Also, many consumers simply don’t slather on enough of the stuff. You need a teaspoon on your face, a shot-glass of it on your body. Re-apply as you swim and sweat, or just every few hours if you’re in intense exposure.

Or here’s another bad reason not to protect your skin: you’ve experienced breakouts as the result of using sunscreen. This is simply because you’re using a formula which doesn’t make your skin happy. Check with your Dermalogica skin therapist and identify your skin conditions. If your skin is sensitized, acneic, in need of deep hydration, and so on, there is a UV product which will keep your skin safe from free radicals and worse without causing more problems.

And here’s a flash from Dr. Diana Howard, our resident chemistry authority. Properly exfoliating skin after sun exposure—which really is every day—may be helpful in averting carcinogens. They may literally be whisked safely off the skin’s surface. Talk to your skin therapist to choose an exfoliant which works for you.
